How to Know If Your Furniture Needs Reupholstering

When deciding whether or not to reupholster a piece of furniture, there are a few things to consider, like the quality of the furniture and the sentimental value attached to it. This is a choice that many come to face at one point or another. A favorite comfy chair is ripped, dirty or needs repair and you don’t want to discard it, but is it worth repairing? Our professionals at Calico Corners can help you determine if your furniture needs reupholstered. Here are some things to think about before you bring your furniture to us.

The Age of the Piece

If you currently own a piece of old, worn out furniture that may need to be updated you may want to think about having it reupholstered. When thinking about making something old new again you need to consider the age of the furniture. Is it something that is new that would easily be replaced or is it an antique? If it is an antique, reupholstering is probably your best bet to restoring it because it would not easily be replaced. You would also not want to get rid of a family heirloom that would be irreplaceable. So, considering the age of the piece of furniture is important to look at.

Quality of the Piece

When considering reupholstering a piece of furniture you must also look at the quality of it, and thus the value of it. If it is poorly made, it may not be worth restoring the piece. If you are not sure of the value and/or quality of the piece there are a few things that can help you to determine its value. If the piece is constructed with springs you will want to look at them first – high quality furniture has hand tied springs whereas lower quality pieces have sinuous springs. Another test would be to lift the piece up from one side and see how heavy it is. Heavier furniture has a more solid frame meaning that it is made well. Also, you will want to see if the piece has been reupholstered previously, if so then chances are it is worth doing again.

Sentimental Value

Another thing you will want to consider is the sentimental value of the piece of furniture. If the furniture is something that you could not imagine not having or something that you absolutely love then you will definitely want to looking at updating it. You would definitely want to have Great-Grandma’s rocking chair that has been in your family for generations restored for future generations to enjoy. Also, if it is a statement piece that you need in the room and would have a difficult time finding something comparable then updating it may be the only choice.
